The gun totin’ Burdz in the Saloon. Another old western setting for the Burdz. A firm favourite of Max. He loved his westerns. Lots going on from the drunk up on the bar, the angry wife come to stop her Bo from gambling away their hard earned dollars. Maybe she is also related the the beauty in the portrait to the right of the bar. Lots of other little funny details all over the in the saloon.
Max takes every opportunity to create humour in his cartoons. Once he has got the main theme done, he then starts adding more in the background. Some little characters are missed until you have looked at the cartoon a dozen times. Then you spot another tiny little insect or something and he will gain another little smile.
The Burdz were created in his early years as a cartoonist. He went on to write a story about where they come from and how they live.
The book was called “The Burdz of Burdle”, which is a short illustrated storybook. The burdz were also put into all other walks of life and he found many ways to show them in humorous situations. Some of the cartoons are very detailed with so much going on it takes many views to see all the hidden jokes.
He also created a cartoon strip about a pirate named “Capt’n Jake”. This was many years ahead of its time and although originated over 50 years ago, is still very current when you read them today. There is also his abstract paintings and his sculptures, which are all available on his website. They all contribute to a lifetime of creativity.
Since resurrecting Max’s drawing and digitising them for his website, we found and cataloged many hundreds of lovely drawings. Many images were later coloured by his friend John Barry and printed, along with the rest of the set, for his exhibition in 2015. This was not coloured but has its own charm just the way he drew it.
Search for other cartoons by Max and enjoy his humour.
